How CGPA Works in SRM IST

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) represents your overall academic performance across all semesters. It is a weighted average that accounts for the varying credit loads of each semester.

While your GPA measures your performance for a single 6-month period, your CGPA is the true reflection of your entire academic journey.

The CGPA Formula

CGPA = Sum(Semester GPA x Semester Credits) / Sum(All Credits)

Each semester GPA is weighted by its total credits. Semesters with more credits impact your CGPA more than lighter semesters.

CGPA Calculation Example

SemesterCreditsGPAGPA x Credits
Semester 1248.5204
Semester 2248.2196.8
Semester 3239207
Semester 4238.7200.1
Total94807.9

CGPA = 807.9 / 94 = 8.59

GPA vs CGPA

  • GPA: Measures performance in a single semester. Uses individual subject grades and credits.
  • CGPA: Measures performance across all semesters combined. Uses semester GPAs weighted by their respective total credits.
