Maintaining a high CGPA at SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRM IST) is a common goal for students, especially those aiming for placements in Super Dream companies or higher education abroad. If your CGPA isn't where you want it to be, don't panic. With the right strategies, you can significantly pull it up over the next few semesters.
1. Understand the Credit Weightage
Not all subjects are created equal. A 4-credit core subject has exactly double the impact on your GPA compared to a 2-credit elective or lab. Focus your energy on high-credit subjects. Securing an 'O' or 'A+' in a 4-credit course will boost your GPA significantly more than getting the same grade in a 1-credit seminar.
2. Maximize Internal Marks (CTs and Assignments)
At SRM, internal marks usually account for 50% of your total grade. Cycle Tests (CTs), assignments, surprise tests, and attendance form your internal score. Do not take internals lightly. If you score 45/50 in internals, you only need to score 46/100 in the final university exam to secure an 'O' grade (91+ total). Consistent effort during the semester makes the final exams much less stressful.
Pro Tip
Use our Target GPA Calculator to calculate exactly what grades you need in your current semester to reach your target overall CGPA.
3. Never Lose Attendance Marks
SRM usually allocates 5 marks purely for attendance in your internals. Getting 95%+ attendance guarantees you 5/5 marks. These are basically free marks that require zero studying. Losing them can sometimes drop you from an 'O' to an 'A+', which ultimately affects your CGPA.
4. Choose Open Electives Wisely
When selecting Open Electives or Department Electives, consult your seniors. Some electives are notoriously difficult, while others are known as "scoring subjects". Choosing a subject you find interesting and is relatively easier to score in is a massive advantage.
5. Analyze Previous Year Question Papers (PYQs)
SRM IST end-semester exams often follow a pattern. Analyzing the last 3-4 years of question papers will give you a clear idea of important topics, recurring questions, and the expected depth of answers. Never walk into an end-semester exam without reviewing PYQs.
Improving your CGPA is a marathon, not a sprint. Focus on one semester at a time, optimize for internal marks, and use credit weightages to your advantage. Good luck!
